Screen-Free Summer Fun: 10 Ideas to Keep Kids Busy

Let’s be real — summer with kids can be a wild mix of magical moments and non-stop snack requests followed by the dreaded “I’m boooored.” Handing over a tablet buys you 20 minutes of peace. Sometimes we’re looking to hit pause on screen time without losing our sanity, right?

And don’t get me wrong, I’m not against electronics, screens, games – everything in moderation. I am a working-from-home mom, and there are moments when the screen saves my sanity and gives me some time to work. Well. Summer feels different.

These screen-free summer activities were tried and tested by me and my boys when they were younger. You don’t need fancy supplies or a Pinterest-perfect setup — just a few simple ideas to spark imagination, burn some energy, and keep those little hands busy (without a screen in sight).

1. Nature Scavenger Hunt (With a Twist)

This one’s a total winner! Especially when the kids are bouncing off the walls and you just need them outside. Grab a basket, a paper bag, or even an old Tupperware lid and challenge them to find:

  • Something soft
  • Something round
  • Something that moves
  • Something that smells funny (brace yourself)
  • Something they’ve never noticed before

The twist? Let them add their own challenge to the list — kids love flipping the script. Bonus points if they turn it into a story about magical forest creatures or talking bugs. Zero prep, tons of imagination, and they come back covered in grass stains = success in my book.

2. Water Play with a DIY Splash Station

No pool? No problem. This is summer magic at its simplest — and it keeps them busy and cool, which honestly feels like a parenting win.

Set out a few buckets of water (or a big plastic storage box), some measuring cups, spoons, spray bottles, painting brushes, maybe a sponge or two… and just let them go wild. You’d be surprised how long kids will stay entertained transferring water from one container to another!

It’s messy. It’s easy. And it buys you enough time to sip your iced coffee before it melts completely.

3. Backyard Obstacle Course

You know that random collection of hula hoops, jump ropes, couch cushions, and pool noodles taking up space in the garage? Time to put them to work.

Let the kids help build a wacky obstacle course using whatever you’ve got — crawl under chairs, hop over sticks, balance on a rope, toss a ball into a laundry basket. The messier and more made-up it is, the better.

Older kids love timing each other and trying to beat their own score. The little ones just love the idea of being on a “ninja course.” Bonus: it totally counts as exercise, and they burn off enough energy to sit still for dinner.

4. Host a Kid-Led Picnic

This one’s adorable and slightly chaotic — but that’s kind of the point, right?

Let your kids take the lead: they pack the snacks, pick the spot (blanket in the backyard, under the table, wherever), and “host” the picnic. Expect things like dry cereal, crushed crackers, and possibly a single grape… but it’s not about the menu, right? It’s about giving them the freedom to feel in charge.

Encourage them to make signs, invitations (for you, the dog, a line of stuffed animals — all welcome), or even create a playlist if you’re cool with some background dance tunes. Then sit back and enjoy being a guest.

Pro tip: Bring wipes. Always bring wipes.

5. Library Treasure Hunt or Book Bingo

If your kids are starting to treat reading like a chore, this little trick adds just enough mystery to make it feel fun again.

Before you head to the library, give them a “treasure list”. Something like:

  • A book with a blue cover
  • A story about an animal
  • A book that makes you laugh
  • One you’ve never heard of
  • A book that looks super old

Or turn it into a Book Bingo challenge for the week. Read 5 squares, win a prize (like staying up 10 minutes late or picking what’s for dinner). Suddenly, they’re racing to read, and you get a quiet moment while they do.

Librarians love this kind of thing, too. Ours once helped my son find a “book with a robot AND a dinosaur,”. Now she’s basically his hero.

6. Craft Without Chaos

Crafts are cute in theory…until the glitter comes out and your kitchen looks like a unicorn exploded. That’s why I’m all about low-mess + low-effort crafting that still feels magical to kids.

Here are a few screen-free favorites:

  • Paint with water on the sidewalk (bonus: it dries in the sun = no cleanup!)
  • Nature art: leaves, sticks, flowers + glue = masterpieces
  • Pasta necklaces (add food coloring to dry pasta for extra flair)
  • Make puppets out of socks or paper bags and put on a “show”
  • Create postcards to mail to family (hello, pen pal practice)

Keep a “craft box” handy with just the basics: tape, crayons, scissors, paper scraps. The less you offer, the more creative they get. Win-win.

7. Backyard Camping

You don’t need a tent. Or even a backyard. You need a few blankets, a flashlight, and a solid sense of adventure.

If the weather’s good, let them “camp” outside with sleeping bags, a picnic dinner, and a mission to spot the first star. If you’re city-bound or rain ruins your plans, no problem — build a sheet fort inside and call it Camp Living Room.

Add in:

  • Flashlight stories (the spookier, the better)
  • DIY trail mix bar
  • Campfire songs, even if the “campfire” is a nightlight wrapped in orange tissue paper

8. Family Cook-Off or Bake-Off

Let the kids take over the kitchen (within reason, of course). Pick a theme (like “best smoothie,” “craziest sandwich,” or “funniest cookie design”) and let each kid create their own culinary masterpiece.

They’ll feel like contestants on a cooking show, and you’ll get to judge the results like you’re on a very low-budget episode of MasterChef: Mom Edition.

Pro tip: Prep a few safe options they can choose from, and embrace the mess. This one’s less about the recipe and more about the giggles, teamwork, and inevit able flour explosion.

Oh, and don’t forget — everyone has to clean up their own station. That’s part of the challenge.

9. Backyard Toy Wash Station

If your kids love water and you want to sneak in a bit of cleaning, this one’s a gold mine. Fill a bucket with soapy water, toss in sponges or toothbrushes, and let them “deep clean” their toy cars, dolls, action figures, or even outdoor gear. It works like a charm!

Set up a rinse station and a towel for drying, and suddenly your patio becomes a full-on toy spa. It’s oddly satisfying, keeps them busy, and those sticky toys might finally look semi-presentable again.

10. Good Old-Fashioned Boredom

Yep. Sometimes the best thing you can do… is nothing at all.

Let them be bored. Let them wander around the house muttering, “there’s nothing to do.” Let them flop dramatically on the couch. Here’s the secret: boredom is the birthplace of creativity (and also sock puppet theatre, indoor ninja battles, and cardboard rocket ships).

You can even make a “boredom jar”: fill it with simple, screen-free ideas they can pull when they really can’t think of anything (don’t worry, I made one for you — check it out below 👇).

The truth is, kids don’t need constant entertainment. They just need space, a little imagination, and the chance to figure it out on their own.
